I am talking about selling the "IP rights" they gain from patents to
the industry. Although this always existed, the big "land grab" taken
by patents everywhere (not just in academia) changed the picture a lot.

Releasing research information to the public is now a "profit loss"
to the university, and it may prevent its free release. Just as an
