Weird fonts problems can happends from tons of things:

* First, disable anti alias and see if it helps
* Second - make sure you got some true type fonts (from MS web site, or from a 
windows partition) and that you have them either in your X font server or in 
the /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 file. If they are in the latter, make sure that 
"freetype" module in X is loading..
* check with KDE's control center fonts if you see it at all in the preview...
