I found a fairly simple solution to the problem: OpenOffice apparently puts its own TrueType fonts in the directory
/usr/lib/openoffice/share/fonts/truetype So I renamed that directory to something else, and instead, linked my X truetype directory. Started OpenOffice, all the fonts appeared in the menu beautifully, and they print correctly as well.
