Hello all I am proud of presenting, my first release of a set of rpm's containing a 2.4.18 linux kernel, and a set of precompiled linmodem drivers (modules) rpms. I also supply lirc drivers for flyvideo tv card, and some other precompiled rpm's. All were build on a mdk 8.1 (glibc 2.2) using gcc 2.96. The kernel was compiled for classic pentiums class. Get them at: ftp://iglu.org.il/pub/Hebrew/diego/
important note: This is the first release so before you install it and boot the new kernel, please be sure you can restore the system if the worst scenario happens. Keep another kernel close. Please do not install the kernel headers provided with this package yet since I am not sure if this package is safe. If you are brave test and report. The target of this project is those who have some kind of winmodem which has support for linux (linmodem). You will be able to d/l a precompiled kernel (non patched kernel), and a binary driver for your software modem. If you have a FlyVideo tv card, you may want to d/l this kernel, and install the driver for the remote control. You may also want to d/l xawtv with lirc support, and a plugin for xmms. (search with your favorite engine about them). supported modems are: * pctel: hals cm8738, pct789, i810Intel, via686a, i810sis, using drivers V0.8.6 * intel: ham, using driver V440 * lucent: (I really wonder which ones), using driver 5.99b1, 6.00c2 and 8.22a3, you can choose which one to install. (all should be the same) Conexant/rockwell will probably next to be supported, mean while on the site you can d/l precompiled drivers for every distro and kernel you want. http://www.mbsi.ca, and from there choose your modem (hcf/hsf) distro, and kernel. if someone is using sm56 modem by Motorola, and reports that this model works, with this kernel I will be glad to know! (havent test it yet) contrib rpms: 1) lirc, and flyvideo driver. you can get the lirc driver for flyvideo as well for this kernel module only. If was broken to several packages, for dependency issues. If someone wants another driver supported by lirc 0.6.5, please send me a private note and I will compile a rpm for that driver. I am working on an autoconfig script which will config ~/.lircrc while the user is logging, and run lircd. I have problems with config, if you want to help mail me privately. 2) xmms-lirc-plugin a plug in for xmms which enables you to control xmms with your control remote. 3) xawtv 3.73 this xawtv rpm was compiled with lirc support. So if you want to install it, you will need to install also lirc-lib. Soon to come xawtv with the deinterlace patch. (compiled with lirc support as well). Now to some technical details and questions to you: 1) the kernel is a 2.4.18 with no patches (some drivers need an unpatched kernel to compile). It does not run any script after the rpm is installed, so you will have to configure lilo/grub to use this kernel. It install itself in /lib/modules/2.4.18, and /boot/2.4.18/{bzImage, config.2.4.18, System.map} as you see the config which I used to compile the kernel is in the /boot/2.4.18 dir. 2) the lucent rpms, were not created by me, they are the ones created with the script in the source of that driver. 3) the pctel drivers need a few tweaks to the rpm spec. 4) lirc installs it's startup scripts in /etc/rc.d/{init.d, rc2.d, rd3.d, rc5.c}, should they be changes to /etc/init.d, /etc/rc?.d or leave them as they are? 5) documentation is in /usr/sharge/doc. should it be /usr/doc? 6) is the kernel configuration OK? what needs to be changed? todo: 1) the kernel should configure lilo and grub, modify /etc/modules.conf, ask user for cdrws, and let user choose default boot (text or framebuffer) 2) lirc should use autoconfig. 3) add conexant drivers 4) are more drivers needed? (3rd party video, joystick, sound whatever?) This is the first release, and problems are likely to be. please be patient, and report problems to me. diego <iastrubn -at- actcom.co.il>. - diego -- Marriage is low down, but you spend the rest of your life paying for it. -- Baskins ================================================================= To unsubscribe, send mail to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with the word "unsubscribe" in the message body, e.g., run the command echo unsubscribe | mail [EMAIL PROTECTED]
