please note though that this is not open source and actually proprietary.

check out q5.
anyways this is a pretty neat solution, though a bit dirty because u
have to plant a An optional rom besides the bios. however,
I wouldn't be surprised if several vendors are going to include the iscsi client code
to the bios till the end of the year.

Hmm... why can't u do this without an optional rom with Linux?
I mean, of course you will have to add the iscsi permanently to the kernel, but you
can load all other modules/etc.. from the iscsi server.
I personally don't have any problem with the kernel knowing it operates on an iscsi
device. In fact, it would probably be better because it can tune its buffers and
algorithms to get A LOT higher performance.
Today you already have the PXE hardware from Intel or software solutions, there is not
need to force the hardware solution on Linux
because u could do it in software. (for windows I must giggle a bit,
ok enough giggling).
In fact check this link http://linux-iscsi.sourceforge.net/
my 2.8.17 include iscsi support.

btw: how does a mounted system looks like on the server? a virtual disk(mounted image)
or must it be a real partition?
do I need hardware on the server or can you use Linux software? +regular network card
on both client and server.
