There are claims that some stupid network apps do not work if the
loopback address is mapped to a name other than localhost.localdomain.
The /etc/host that comes with RH systems has a comment to that effect.

I usually keep 127.0.0.1 to localhost, and give names to addresses
like 192.168.0.1 etc.
