Did you try using "-configure" instead of "--configure"?  As a rule, programs
descended from MIT's X11 project always use a single dash for their long
options, rather than the GNU convention of a single dash for single-letter
options and a double dash for long options.  The reason for this practice is to
confuse and frustrate Unix users everywhere.
