Most IMAP clients/servers support SSL (including mutt and Mozilla, if I
remember correctly). And if you want, you can also tunnel it over ssh (though
that is much more complicated if you don't know how).

By the way, you should be much more worried about transferring your password
unencrypted than transferring the actual emails: where do you think these
emails came from? They were moved across the Internet with the unencrypted
SMTP protocol :(

Lately there have been rumors of spammers getting access in important Internet
exchanges, sniffing smtp traffic and getting email addresses that would be
impossible to get in any other way. Maybe the paranoia is justified ;)
But what do I care about that? I use the same email address for over 10 years,
and every spammer on the planet already has it!
