Check your sendmail.mc and if there is a line like
FEATURE(`genericstable',`hash -o /etc/mail/genericstable') comment it out, regenerate sendmail.cf, and restart sendmail. It is more or less decently (for sendmail) documented, have you got sendmail-doc installed?
