phpgroupware is beta beta beta !
looks bad, and acts even worse. you had a bad start with webmail blients if 
thats where you started.
for a good client try neomail : http://neomail.sourceforge.net
another good one is openwebmail : http://openwebmail.org/
i have openwebmail installed on my server - works like a charm.

you are right about onw thing : no match for a desktop app. but is you have 
to provide web-besed service, as might as well go with a good one with nice 
GUI.
