I you are "well aware that this doesn't happen", what are you arguing about??
Please read again what he said, and perhaps the utf-8 manual, if you don't
know how exactly utf8 works (I'm not saying you don't - maybe you're just
playing the devil's advocate ;)).

Ok, I see I am not communicating with people in a mutual language. I was hoping to give an analogy from an area I have experience in and you don't (MBCS encoding), to an area you know, thus perhaps making it a little clearer. I see the error of my ways now. I will never, ever, assume again that you have the magical powers of extrapolation. I will now leave this thread for good, and let the wise ones decide on a solution while I'm absent.
