I don't follow your logic:

Do you have one common /usr/local that everybody uses (or anything
equivalent)?

If not: you have to compile and install seperately for each machine.

using rpms/debs/etc. may help you decrese that a bit (build one package
for all the redhat 7.1's andother one for all the redhat 6.2's and a third
one for all the debian 2.2's)
