sorry, maybe I should have explained my self more brightly.
Yes, we have a common /usr/local/ which is exported with NFS to all the
machines. It is divided into two parts - one is architecture dependent
and the other is not. When we compile we use the "--prefix" and
"--exec-prefix" (or equivalence) in order to tell it what to put where.
each machine uses NIS maps and automounter to mount the specific path it
needs according to its architecture.
