I don't know about "people".

If I need a newer version of some package, I download the source package
and rebuild it. As long as it is not a package that too many other
packages depend on (e.g: an important library, fileutils, etc.) it is
usually quite safe, as you can know all of the side effects, and you can
generally always revert to the original package if your newly-built
package is screwed-up.
