I have no idea what I'm looking for. There's no mention of dsp, but there is a
line like this:

 14 sound

I tried it - no error messages, but it didn't solve the problem either

I agree, but this is really strange. As I wrote before, in Mandrake 8.0 I had
sound. The modules exist in /lib/modules/2.4.8-34.1mdk - so what's changed?

I even thought of compiling the Kernel, but that looks like over-kill. It makes
no sense that the card stopped working on a newer kernel. And, honestly, I have
to say two things:

1 - I'm afraid that if I do compile a kernel, I risk screwing up things that
already do work (and no guarantee it'll solve the problem).

2 - In the years I've used Linux, I've come across several configuration
problems and in most cases, the solution was not really too difficult, but I
can't understand why setting up a sound card requires a doctorate - even
Redmond got that part right years ago.
