Do you use /devfs ?

If not, then the file /dev/dsp is there whether or not a devicereally
exists.

Check /proc/devices etc.

Have you tried 'modprobe' instead?

It appears from the above that you have a problem with the kernel support
of you module. Probably no use trying to reinstall kdemultimedia:
kdemultimedia only uses the kernel support.
