It is XFree that hangs. KDE is all user applications. X is the one
operating a virtual console (and runs as root, with the power to freeze
the console)

I figure that running X under strace is more tricky. Maybe you need to
have something like 'strace Xserver' in /etc/X11/xinit/xserverrc
