ok, i think i'll assign to you the job of maintaining the mirrors. for
starters, the 'run-rsync' script has soemhow vanished about 3 weeks ago,
and need to be written from scratch. Ilya has kindly written a description
of what this script needs to do - i'll forward it to anyone vulanteering -
knowledge of shell scripts - a MUST. also ability to read existing
scripts, man rsync, and be extra carefull - it took me over a month to
bring the mirror back to life, and i'd virtually disect anyone woh
accidentally erases it due to bugs in the script - so one need to be extra
carefull about what they are doing.

do you vulanteer? :P~~

there is also a need to install security updates from time to time - i'm
not talking about zope (requires some previous experience with handling
zope, and right now, looks like only chen has that) or mysql (shlomi
configured it in a manner too peculear for me to follow). ofcourse, if you
break any of these services, they can be fixed remotely, so its not a
biggy (and people are already used to our poor level or service anyway) -
but if, for example, one updates sshd, they should be extra carefull. same
would go for kernel upgrades (the last one broke the software raid, and
thus requierd reformatting the mirror disks...), library upgrades, etc.

any vulanteer for this task?

i have no idea how the work site even works. i need others' help when i
wish to update any web pages. when i send announcements, i've no idea how
to moderate them - they magically appear after a day (or a week) - i think
this has something to do with alex shnitman, but i won't bet on that.

syncing with huji's mirror is low on my priorities list. do you wish to
take over the mirror handling? it requiers checking the ammount of free
disk space from time to time, and adidng new sections to the 'exclude'
files, when the soup spills.. not to mention writing this rsync-run
script, cause until then, there are no mirror updates, except for those
i'll do manually (and this does not include updating debian mirror - it
was last updated on 30-nov-2001, and i don't inetnd to manualy sync it).

so, here's your big chance. are you gonna do it?

and hw many times did people ask that, did get answers and then vanished
into limbo? i'll help you, provided that you define exactly what you
intend to do, and then follow through. and please don't vulanteer unless
you are sure you will be able to be somewhat commited (i.e. 2-3 hours a
week normally, more when there aer problems).

cause people spend enough time doing their thing, that reporting about the
status doesn't occur to them as so obvious, as it does to you (or
sometimes, even to me - and i always forget to notify when i need to bring
the system down).

lets find one eprson to handle the mirrors. Ilya has done a good job with
that, until he was drafted. i took over cause it was this, or having no
mirrors however, since i'm also the one that has to run to the server room
every time there is a problem, i'm not intending to handle both things.
