What do you mean by Serial? There are some wires going out of the machine and eventually getting to the Internet, aren't there? How are these wires connected to your friend's machine? Isn't there a serial port, a network device or something? No ISP? Then the connection is to another machine that you own? Is this a new setup? What is your command line? IIRC, the kernel should assign ppp devices on the fly. Isn't having it choose the 8th device show that there are some stale ones, possibly as a result of previous attempts to connect?
