Hi

I am quite happy with my no-name Winmodem, based on PCTel chipset
PCT789 (others by PCTel also work, but check before you buy, here
<http://www.medres.ch/~jstifter/linux/pctel.html>).
I bought mine in MACHSANEI HAMACHSHEV, near KANYON AYALON,
for 100 NIS, around half a year ago. I believe other stores also
have PCTel based modems, usually without any technical info.
When connected, it incurs a load of ~ 20% on the CPU (a 300MHz
Celeron), and I download in speeds ~ 5.8KB/s. I think that's
normal for 56K modems, much lower then my old ISA 33K that
gave me 3.8KB/s (92% off the rated maximum vs. 82% now).
