I was encountering either unreadable text or "gibberish" text, despite
having previously installed locale support and appropriate fonts.

I now installed Mozilla 0.9.5, and Galeon (which requires Mozilla) and
only selected the additional language and, or, character set support, and
my previous problems dissappeared!

No.

BTW, the problem I was actually trying to solve was that I was unable to
fully and properly access some pages and drop down menues on a local
(English Language) site, namely www.sbic.co.za as apparently their idea of
html code and java script did not seem to agree with my RH 6.2 and RH 7.1
with Netscape 4.78. I am still unable to access that site fully with
either Netscape 4.78 or Konqueror and it did not appear to work too well
with Mozilla 0.9.2.
