Have you tried sth like

smbmount //service /mnt/w2k -o username=<name> workgroup=<domain> \
password=<passwd>

?

There are two things that are relevant:

a) the kernel - what are you running?
b) smbclient - the current, I believe, is samba-client-2.0.8-1.7
