As far as I know Intel keeps its future generations of processes fully
compatible with previous. So each application that ran on 386 will run on
Pentium 4. I don't see why there should be a problem with running Linux on
it. As was correctly pointed out you may not see the advantages: cause
currently the compilers do not support all the new sets of commands and
don't fully utilize the hardware support.

Yes, I saw Mandrake Linux installed on a Pentium 4.
I don't know if it works well (my feeling is that they did very little
beyond installing the system) but it sure wakes up and responds to
(trivial) commands.
