Typically one only modifies the personal settings, which reside under the
home directory and are not affected by installation of RPMs.
annoyingly enough, kde keeps all of its config under /usr/share . Unlike
the situation with, say, X app-defaults, and debian/mandrake menu entries
there is no way to have an overriding local settings under /etc . Thus
if you have modified the kde global config, and are using RPMs, you should
search that directory for *.rpmnew and *.rpmsave files (if there are none,
then you probably haven't changed the global configuration).

There is also .kderc , right?

This means that /if/ you have changed any global config file
(/usr/share/config) , thenthose changes are lost.
But typically one changes the per-user settings, and not the global
settings.
