shaul - what you describe below is _good_ things about usenet. not bad
things at all. read what you wrote - maybe it's just me who don't
understand your point:

what is bad about this? it means that people can choose whether to only
search through the data, or participate in the discussion.

which means the information can be useful twice - once through the
discussion, and once through the ability to search the archives. that's
what happens with mailing lists, too, except that they are not all
archived in the same loaction, and thus searching through ALL of them is
currently not an available option.

on the contrary - unlike mailing lists, which are completely distribuetd,
news groups flow via the same nes servers, allowing you to search through
most of them in a single search. show me how to do that with mailing
lists, and i'll be very happy.
> Doesn't a mailing list solve those problems, at least partially?
it solves two problems:
1. i don't need to be reminded to read my news groups settings, cause
reading mail is a regular habbit. (ofcourse, i could write some script
that'll remind me to read newsgroups every time i log in...).
2. its up to you, not your provider, to decide when to delete excessive
old messages.
hmm, maybe i should go back to reading usenet again ;)
