Dear
Friends, Bar-Ilan linux activities are starting next week! Final details are still being sorted out for the "advanced" lecture series, but below please find the program of the "beginner" series. Looking forward to seeing you, Jeremy Schiff [EMAIL PROTECTED] David Shadmi [EMAIL PROTECTED] ------------------------------------------------------------------ Welcome to Linux! Linux, the free unix-type operating system created by Linus Torvalds 10 years ago, is becoming a major force in the computer world. The linux source code is freely available. As a result it has been reviewed and corrected by an enormous number of programmers, making it very reliable. Another feature is its flexibility: you are free to change the source code any way you want. And last but not least: it sure is low cost! Many major hardware companies are now shipping machines with linux pre-installed. The main target right now is the low-end server market. Indeed, there are claims that more web servers run linux than any other operating system. But linux has also made inroads into many other markets, from home computers to high-performance number-crunching. We are pleased to announce a series of 6 lectures covering all the basics you need to know to start using linux. The lectures are all being given on a volunteer basis by experienced linux users, mostly students (or former students) here at Bar-Ilan University. In the spirit of linux, the lectures are free, and are open (space permitting!) to all. All lectures are scheduled for Wednesdays at 19:45 (lasting till about 21:15), in the "Ulam Congressim" on the 2nd floor of the Feldman building (building 301) on the Bar-Ilan campus (see http://www.biu.ac.il/General/campusmap/ for a map of the campus). Date Title Lecturer ==== ===== ======== 28 Feb General Introduction Shaul Karl 14 Mar Installation Eran Lotan 28 Mar Introduction to X windows David Shadmi 9 May Basic system administration Boaz Yagudiner 23 May Basic Networking Haim Tzadok 6 June Hebrew Tzafrir Cohen All lecturers are thanked in advance for donating their time and effort! Why no meetings in April? April is busy with Pesach, Yom Hashoah, Yom Haatzmaut etc. And also at the start of April we will hopefully hold our first installation party (an official announcement will come). And then of course everyone's going to want to spend a few weeks playing around with the system. Some requests from the University: 1) For those without University parking permits, sorry, the University is crowded, would you please park your cars on the street or in one of the off-campus lots. 2) The Feldman Building is a no-smoking building. 3) Please do not bring food or drink into the Ulam Congressim.
