ICQ2000 is using exactly the same OSCAR protocol as AOL Instant Messenger
does. Please note that it's the full AIM protocol, not the basic TOC (?)
one implemented in many open source AIM clients.

I heard reports that you can connect ICQ by tuning GAIM (a GNOME AIM client)
to ICQ's login server and using your UIN as the "Screen Name".
There's also an API available for connecting to OSCAR servers. Search for
'libfaim'.

A curious note - I was sitting one day sniffing the ICQ 2000 protocol,
trying to figure it out.... well, OSCAR or not OSCAR, their
authentication is done with a password XOR-hashed against a constant
string!
(For comparison, Jabber uses much more secure "non-sniffable"
challenge-response authentication)
