I see I won't be able to convince you :)

the time), the non-official gcc 2.96 of Redhat 7 is actually better in
many respects (I think mainly in C++ support) than the gcc in Redhat 6.2.
In fact, what you call redhat's "unfriendly" answer on this issue is that
gcc has come such a long way since Redhat 6.2 was released, that they
felt they couldn't revert back to the old gcc just because the gcc team
didn't decide it's time to release it.
True, gcc 2.96 can't compile a kernel correctly. "kgcc", a copy of the older
gcc, is included in Redhat 7 for that purpose, and while this solution is
a little ugly, it works perfectly.
