1) I do not know what exactly do you mean by ``compact flavor'' but there
should be a detailed docs for new installation both on the CD and on
www.debian.org. I would try to consult them. As far as I know the kernels for
a new installation on the CD has a tendency to be as compact as it can.
Perhaps you should simply go with the defaults?
2) You might try [EMAIL PROTECTED] and [EMAIL PROTECTED] I
believe you will find both lists very helpful.
