The problem with HSP modems is that they do take some processing power,
they have real time requirements much harsher than serial modems, even
with small fifo, and they require complicated drivers which are usually
closed source, so you are depnedent on someone else whenever you want to
upgrade your system. 
Controllerless modems with hardware DSPs are a bit better, but have a
proprietary interface.
