Why? I don't see any reason for that.

Unless he didn't write them from the downloaded images in the first
place, of course.

Basically, you have to make sure that you read the CD in 2k blocks,
i.e. use the bs=2k parameter to dd. If you use bigger blocks it may be
faster, but the last block may not be completely readable, which makes
dd fail.
