Why reinstall? Instead of solving a small, local problem, you now have to
reconfigure your system your system once again.
Do you have a rescue diskette? Boot with it, mount your old system, chroot
into it, reinstall grub, and no more problems.
Actually you can do the same with the installation CD:
as soon as you get to the "second stage install" (when you select the
language), you already have a shell in the second virtual consle.
Press Ctrl-Alt-F2, mount the old system, etc.

The first thing you should try is XFdrake (or Xconfigurator on RedHat, or
sax on suse). Those tools are easier to work with, and are enough for the
common case. It has worked before (during your previous installation).

But first try XFdrake , and XF86Setup or xf86cfg (not xf86config)
