On a Debian machine I would explore the possibility to add something like
alias eth0 ne
options ne io=0x280 irq=5
to /etc/modutils/aliases and then use update-modules. Not sure if this is the
right way to go but it would be my starting point.
Not familiar with SUSE. Perhaps you should try their help desk as well?
As for the required address, perhaps you should explore /proc after you
managed to add it manually? Maybe the logs will show you that (again, after a
manual insertion)?
