You might want to try with lower resolutions like 640x480 on 60Hz, and
if it works - find out which fits your monitor. (btw - which monitor you
have? brand? inches? refresh rates?)
Could you publish which graphics card you have?
also - if you can - login as a root and type: lspci -vv > filename
Where filename is a file which you can post here..
