Hi People,

The KDE 2.0 development has been announced as gold, and the tar balls have been
sent to the packagers. Soon (probably within a day or 2) you'll see RPM's, DEB's
and TAR.GZ's on the KDE web pages. An official release will be on Oct. 23rd..

For us, the Israeli users, we'll need something that has been a problem since
the beginning - a keyboard mapping...

With KDE 1.x - there was an application inside KDE called "kikbd" which lets you
very easily switch the keyboard from hebrew to english and vice versa. This
application unfortunately wasn't ported to KDE 2.0 and it will be ported only to
KDE 2.1.

What we need is some soul to write a short document how to enable hebrew
keyboard. In KDE 2.0 there is an application called "kxkb" but it's not useful
cause:

1. It only works on XFree 3.3.x
2. it's based on the xkb which needs an external settings, which are not
documented well (and I have tried everything on the Linux-IL web pages)

Also, the hebrew menu's provided by OR are coming in reverse - which is a
problem and I haven't seen any solution for this...

As for the hebrew support in konqueror - it's 90% functional on almost every web
page I have tried (Globes, Ynet, Haaretz, IOL, Bananot, Walla, Tapuz, MSN
Israel, MS Israel, P1000, Excellnet and quite other web sites). You may see some
CSS problems which will probably be fixed later..

However, the entire Hebrew encoding is going to be erased in rewritten from
scratch with the upcoming QT 3.0 - and so far from tests, it seems it will be at
least 3 times faster then the current situation - but the current situation at
least lets you watch almost all the web pages that you can watch with MSIE 5.0

Java: Sun's JRE and IBM's JRE are running with Konqueror but NOT inside sandbox!
which means if you close konqueror - you'll still see the Java apps running.
This will be resolved on KDE 2.1

Thanks
Hetz
