Current winmodems fall into two classes; DSP modems and HSP (Host signal 
processing modems) modems. The DSP modems have a on board Digital Signal 
Processor which does most of the work, like the IBM modem you described. The 
HSP modems leave it up to the CPU to do the decoding. The PC Tel modem is a 
HSP modem and the ESS & Lucent modems are DSP modems.
