Linux runs flawlessly on Compaq systems indeed.
For example, IGLU server (compaq proliant 800) was installed without
any trouble in less than 2 hours, including disk checks (that was the long
part, since there are almost 100 Gb disks).
Regarding support: I was pretty maused to see that compaq "smart start"
utility knew how to prepare system for linux installation.

That option appeared in kernel a long time ago, I think in 2.1.125 or so.
