Here's a problem I was able to sort out, even after going through the PPP FAQ and HOWTOs. I installed a 33k modem from Zoltrix (Rockwell chipset) and while it works, it works fairly stable, but each time after I restart the machine, or after a long delay (many hours of not using the modem to dialup), it will fail on the first connection attempt: Jun 30 00:06:56 toaster pppd[536]: Serial connection established. Jun 30 00:06:56 toaster pppd[536]: Using interface ppp0 Jun 30 00:06:56 toaster pppd[536]: Connect: ppp0 <--> /dev/modem Jun 30 00:06:57 toaster pppd[536]: Hangup (SIGHUP) Jun 30 00:07:00 toaster pppd[536]: Connection terminated. Jun 30 00:07:01 toaster pppd[536]: Hangup (SIGHUP) Jun 30 00:07:01 toaster pppd[536]: Exit. .. and then silently succed on the second attempt and stay connected for hours. or sometimes, it fails PAM authentication on the first attempt but succedes on the 2nd (while not changing the secrets, of course). Jun 28 13:36:15 toaster pppd[988]: Serial connection established. Jun 28 13:36:15 toaster pppd[988]: Using interface ppp0 Jun 28 13:36:15 toaster pppd[988]: Connect: ppp0 <--> /dev/modem Jun 28 13:36:18 toaster pppd[988]: Remote message: Password validation failure Jun 28 13:36:18 toaster pppd[988]: PAP authentication failed Jun 28 13:36:18 toaster pppd[988]: Connection terminated. Jun 28 13:36:19 toaster pppd[988]: Hangup (SIGHUP) I tried tweaking the timeouts in the chat script, but maybe I missed something out, or just not so experienced with modems as the old-time BBS lurkers out there. Ideas, please, anyone? -- Best regards, Ilya Konstantinov a.k.a Toastie ================================================================= To unsubscribe, send mail to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with the word "unsubscribe" in the message body, e.g., run the command echo unsubscribe | mail [EMAIL PROTECTED]
