which means 'xfs' is either not loaded, or that it failed right
after chkfontpath restarted it.
If xfs isn't even launched (probably not the case on a freshly-installed distro):
/etc/rc.d/init.d/xfs start
Otherwise, try reading log files like /var/log/messages.
See /etc/X11/fs/config and make sure it matches the right syntax
as 'man xfs' specifies (all font directories are there,
and all separated by ',' commas, without a comma after the last
directory).
