the kernel crahsed since you got memory violaton, and there is no MMU
in kernel space to throw a segmentation violation and to kill the
violator. The reason is badly written code running in kernel space.
Check whether you do run "stable" kernel - i.e. do not run "dangerous"
features. Check for strange 3d party modules.

Reffer to /usr/src/linux/Documentation/oops-tracing.txt for wide
speculation with some useful information.
