I've been having a problem with PPP lately and to be honest, I'm not really sure
it's LINUX related (but I think it is since using OS/2 I didn't have this
problem) and I'm not even sure it's a PPP problem. But when it happens, I can't
look on the INTERNET for help (obviously), so I'm sending this to the group in
the hope that someone can give me a hint to what is happening or suggest some
way to find out.
First of all, I know the INTERNET is sometimes frustratingly slow, but that's
not the problem here. The problem I'll describe happened today between 6:30 and
7:30 in the morning when there's usually very little traffic.
I'll give today as an example - but this has happened several times before.
I wanted to download something. I found what I was looking for and when I
clicked on the link, it took **forever** to start getting data. The download
speed in Netscape dropped to about 20 bytes/sec !!!!! I tried a different site
(thinking maybe it was a problem at that site) but couldn't even get there. I
tried redialing (to two different ISPs - BARAK and AQUANET) and the speed was
still terrible. I decided to give it a rest for a while and re-connected half
an hour later. Before starting Netscape, I pinged a few Israeli addresses and
got packets back in about 150 - 400 ms (BTW - is that reasonable for a 33,600
modem?). So I tried Netscape again. This time everything seemed fine and I got
connected to what I wanted quickly, but about two minutes later, the speed
again dropped drastically. I tried ping again to see if the problem was
something other than Netscape and got unbelievable packet speeds of between
9000 and 14000 ms !!!! - and that was pinging BARAK - my ISP.
The graph in the KPPP details window also flattened out to nearly zero. Does
anyone have any idea what could be causing this?
I'm running Mandrake 7.0 and GNOME on a Pentium III 500. I use KPPP to dial,
XFMail and Netscape. No other programs are running (except the Terminal I used
to ping). KPM tells me that CPU usage is around 2% and there's plenty of free
memory available. The swap partition hasn't even been used.
