You are describing the SparQ Parallel IDE Disk Drive from Syquest. Each 1.0
GB media cartridge costs about 200 shekels, and the drive itself about
1.200.

The drive works without much fuss under RedHat Linux's generic kernel. You
just need to connect the device to your parallel port and then enter, as
root:

insmod paride
insmod epat
insmod pd

Mount the drive and you are good to go.

If you compile your own kernel, make sure you include parallel support and
the shuttle driver as a module.

Subject: Software transfer riddle

Is there a device (tape, disk, writable CD) with about 0.5-1Gb capacity,
which
works off a parallel port,
works under Linux, doesn't require proprietary software, isn't a pain to
install and doesn't cost an arm and a leg?

Purpose: Simple file transfer and selective backup.
