yes, KDE is more conveniant for closed-source developers I understand,
while gnome conquers the Free Software scene.

Eazel are headed by Andy Hertzfeld, of Apple fame, they are redesigning
the desktop and GUI to make linux as friendly (or more than) a mac.

no other companies I am aware of that are doing concentrated work
focused on KDE in the same way AFAIK.
