ntop (http://www.ntop.org) looks nice.

There is a command-line mode, which is good to show which are currently
taking the bandwidth, and a web interface mode, which is (much) more
informative.

If you only want to show the external network connections you can
something like:

ntop [options] "( not src net $LOCAL_NET ) or ( not dst net $LOCAL_NET )"
