Actually, there's a guy writing a kernel patch to allow mounting CD-RW
disks and writing to them, analogous to the Adaptec DirectCD utility
for Windows (I think that's what you're referring to). It's very
experimental though (at version 0.0.1l, to give you a rough idea).
It's available at http://www.kernel.dk/. It requires the UDF
filesystem patch for Linux, which is at http://linux-udf.sourceforge.net/.

So sometime in the future we'll have this functionality.
