hi,
since no one wrote what's going on in the booth so far, here is a short
summary.
the show appears to be a great success, despite the fact that we were
hardly doing any mambo-jambo demos. people came in, asked lots of
questions, got to see how gnome/kde work, linuxconf, file managers, vmware
and the like. few people asked about development environments and were
refered to various tools (e.g. code forge, ddd, etc).
the internet connection didn't actually work until around noon today.
initially there was a hub problem (compaq brought a 100 Mbit hub, but the
LAN was 10Mbit). we also got wrong gateway and subnet mask initially.
today alex landberg brought a 10 Mbit hub, and then it was found that
there are some "infrastructure problems" (the words of goel of netvision).
at noon we finally managed to ping the world.
people came in and bought CDs all day long. the first 500 were gone, and
200 more were brought in (by ERA"N's people, i beleive), 200 more will be
brought tommorow. Omer's idea of "donation for a CD" worked flawlessly -
this indeed kept the CDs from pooring out in an unconrtrollable manner,
yet the people that realy wanted a linux CD had no problem with the
donations. so, be ready for some new people asking questions on the list
in the next couple of weeks - and do try to be polite. we tried explaining
how they should approach the list (i.e. first give a descent try, read the
docs, and if it still fails, come up with a clear descriptin of the
situation) - lets hope they'll all get the hang of this quickly.
there were more demonstrators then apeared on shaul's initial plan (e.g.
shaul was there most of the day, roi was there too, and yoni and ilya
showed up at some point and join the forces as well, this is beyond the
people that were supposed to be there today). still, there were times when
the booth was so crowded that we were all busy talking to people and
demonstrating stuff. i hope there are enough brochures left for
tommorow...
in general, whoever said that the people in the booth are more important
then having more software and flashes, was quite right.
just as a note - the booth's inside space was too small, and got jammed
quite often. most of the time, there were more people crowded outside the
booth (blocking the coridor) then inside. i'd say that we'll need to have
a better internal setup for the next show - not that it caused any damage,
except for some inconvinience. yet, all in all, i beleive shaul has done a
pretty good organizational job here. and surely, we'd be no-where hadn't
ira started the whole thing up and got the major sponsors (sgi, compaq and
P&C) involved.
lets hope tommorow ends up as good as today, and we could then summarize
this show as a great success...
