I just installed MANDRAKE 7.0 on my new Pentium III - 500. My old
system was RedHat 6.0 on a Pentium 120.

On my old system, I had to compile the kernel to add ide-scsi support
and use the hdc=ide-scsi option at boot-up. And my CD-RW worked fine.

On my new system, the CD-RW works fine under LOSE98 so my problem is
not hardware. MANDRAKE installed everything automatically. X-cdroast
and cdrecord both see the CD-RW (Smart and Friendly 2422 IDE). But
when I try recording, my computer slows to a crawl. And nothing is
recorded. I can't even shut down the sytem - everything is **nearly**
frozen - even though CPU use is about 1 % !!!

When I do CTRL-ALT-F1 to try to open another session to kill whatever
is causing my problem, I find that thousands of error messages are
flooding the screen - I seem to be in some kind of loop. Here are the
messges I'm getting:

ATAPI reset timed out

SCSI host 0 abort (pid 2137) timed out - resetting

SCSI bus is being reset for host 0 channel 0

scsi: aborting command due to timeout: pid=2138 scsi 0, channel 0, id
1, lun 0

ide1: reset timed out status=0x90

hdc: status timeout: status 0x90 {busy}

hdc: drive not ready for command

The SCSI messages are repeated over and over and the rest of the
messages (hdc: ... ) appear at random. The only way to stop this is
to turn of the computer !!!!

BTW, One the primary IDE bus I have a 13 Gb MAxtor drive (Master) and
a ZIP drive (slave). On the secondary IDE bus (/dev/hdc and /dev/hdd)
I have the CD-RW (master) and an ATAPI 48x CD (slave).

Any help would be appreciated.

TIA
