Actually ASP and <OBJECT> are different technologies.
ASP is a server side technology. It's a CGI like technology.

<OBJECT> are part of the Active Pages technology. Active Pages enables you to
enter ActiveX controls in to almost any place Word docs, Excel docs ..... And
HTML.

Whether you call DHTML a standard or a buzzword is your business and I don't care
if it annoys you or not. At least W3 calls it a standard and Netscape calls it a
standard and you can download a document form netscape who give detailed
description of what that standard is and which tags are included in that standard.
