hi all,
i just love new versions of things, so i went to the system yesterday
especially to see if they have mandrake 7.0, which they did, and so they
burned it for me. even though i'm getting a new computer in about a week, i
just had to install it. all i can say is OOOH! it's very neat. for some
reason the installation is never gui on my current computer so i saw the
curses based installation which is very similar to the gui - with buttons
and stuff and it also has themes. when you want to look at a package without
removing it and all its dependencies then you should right click it. the
installation is a little buggy though. it froze up the first time during the
partition choosing stage (probably cause i kept saying ok and then going
back to that stage because i changed my mind) and i was scared that it
erased my partition table - but it didn't. two of the packages that i
noticed are gone are the desktop-backgrounds package which installs all the
cool propaganda backgrounds, and the maxwell wordprocessor package. so i
just installed them from the mandrake 6.0 cd (or is it 6.1?) using
mandrake's rpm tool which displayed exactly what packages i didn't have
installed. check out the tool that automatically recognizes your hardware
and all you have to do is press install for any piece of hardware - it
configured my soundcard. :o) the aliens theme for enlightenment is really
cool although i had to edit one of the theme's config files because there
were these big annoying application icons on the desktop that were blocking
everything. i didn't get a chance to play around with it more because it was
already really late.
in closing: get it. it's very cool. let's hand mandrake 7.0 out to people as
demos on that demo day. sorry for all the ranting and i see now that i
really should brake things up into paragraphs.
bye.
:o)
