Did mounting go ok?
Does unmounting from commandline go ok?
Does unmounting using the icon and /dev/hdb go ok?
hardlinking isn't the solution (but you could have find it out yourself in a
minute. perhaps the program connected to the icon is broken.
if unmounting from command-line works in some way. just write a shellscript
that'll do it and give it an icon.

Does it connect ok from elsewhere?
Perhaps use netscape-navigator instead of just netscape, this way it won't
look for anything mail related.
